Starting off in Japan, Time Attack, Super Lap and Tuner Battles were organised by the media as a proving ground to see the difference between street tuned cars, produced by the tuning industries most respected tuners.
Held at various circuits in Japan although mainly Tsukuba, Time Attack rose in popularity as the stakes began to rise and the tuners had to keep on developing new and improved machines with which to conquer their competition on track with. Since the early days things have moved on and there are now different levels of vehicles entering the competitions, from road cars to full-on specifically engineered Time Attack cars made mostly of carbon fibre as the sport has evolved. Its drivers normally consist of the racing industries finest, drafted-in by tuners to pilot these unlimited machines in the bid to become the quickest.

Throughout the day there will be various warm up and familiarisation sessions to ensure the drivers have adequate time to get used to the circuit and hone the setup of their car. In these periods an open pit lane is conducted whereby competitors are allowed onto the circuit as and when they wish within the time scheduled. These sessions will not be timed and all cars will be allowed on circuit at the same time which is strictly non-race pace.
How does the Time Attack work?
After the familiarisations and when scheduled to, the drivers will line-up in the pit-lane for the next session. Both Pro & Club Classes now run the Super-Battle type competition whereby all cars are out on track against the clock for a 20 minute session.
The quickest of these drivers will go forward to the Super Battle Finals whereby they get a chance to gain points for the 2008 season.
How are they timed ?
Each car will be fitted with a transponder device that works alongside the circuits internal system as used in normal racing. As the car passes the beam the timing begins and runs until the car runs a full and complete lap, triggering off the timing beam to record a lap time in race control. Each car will be allocated numbers to ensure that the correct times apply to each vehicle.
Do they use a standing start like Sprinting?
No. Time Attack is for full complete laps. As each competitor finishes his/her warm up lap they will set off the timing beam as they pass it under full rolling start conditions but at their own pace, i.e. they are not started by circuit lights or flags. Simply the quicker they accelerate out of the warm up will determine how fast they will enter their timed lap.
