Newly formed Manhattan Racing announces 2 car entry into the much coveted “Time Attack” Series for 2010.

The Manhattan Racing Team newly established for 2010 is the joint effort of 2 brothers Tony and Gary Campbell. In 2009 Tony scored a credible 2nd Place in the Championship in the under 3.0L normally aspirated class in his very well prepared Porsche 968 Club Sport.

Manhattan Showers Limited (where Gary Campbell is the Sales and Marketing Director) decided that the “Time Attack” series was a great means of exposure for the company hence the launch of the “Manhattan Racing Team”.

The car line up is now complete with a second Porsche 968 Club Sport, the Brothers have decided to continue with the Porsche 968 albeit disadvantaged on outright power the car offers an excellent starting point to have a car that offers perfect chassis balance, a means of significant weight reduction and an engine that offers reasonable power whilst maintaining reliability.

Technical support and advice will still be provided by Guglielmi Motorsport albeit the Team will be running in the Manhattan livery.

Tony Campbell comments: “2009 was a great year where the car ran faultlessly, for the last round Steve (Guglielmi) offered me his awesome E30 M3 in an effort to pip “Buddy Club Hughes” at the final round which was not to be. For 2010, we have done some more development on the car which should bring us closer to Paul however, with the other competitors upping their game including Mark in the 6R4, 2010 will be an interesting season. It is also great to see the N/A class expand, at the last count it looks like 10 cars are entered which should make for a great year”.

Gary Campbell on his maiden year: “Unlike my brother who raced bikes at a high level, this is my first taste of competitive motorsport, having done track days and Ring trips for many years I have finally taken the plunge. We are still “knee deep” in trying to get my car ready for the season start however, if all goes to plan we should make Oulton. I have set my own personal goal for 2010 which is to be top 5, not having even driven the car yet this may be a bit optimistic. The Manhattan Racing Team was an important decision for us at the factory; the recession is still very much here however we are keen to push our brands to new audiences and whilst Manhattan Investment into the Team is at a very low level it does offer us an exciting new medium to communicate to our potential customers”.

Look out for Manhattan Racing at Oulton Park on the 24th April!

The Motor Sports Association has approved a proposal to bring the Time Attack Series under its auspices as the national governing body of UK motor sport – officially recognising this new type of event as an approved form of motor sport.

Originating in Japan as a way of proving the relative performance of street-tuned cars, Time Attack is a spectacular form of motor sport in which highly-powered cars on road-legal tyres compete on regular motor sport circuits.

Since the sport arrived in the UK five years ago, safety standards have continually improved and with the series growing in popularity among both competitors and a predominantly young audience of enthusiastic fans, the organisers have been working closely with the MSA to bring the sport under the umbrella of the governing body.

Time Attack events will now run under an MSA permit and adhere to all the requirements that this entails, including the appointment of MSA licensed officials, a recognised judicial process and fully trained marshalling cover. Competitors in the Pro-Series will require an MSA Race National B licence, while those participating in the grass-roots class, known as the Club Challenge, will be able to compete with a Non-Race National B licence that can be issued on the day.

While the freedom of engine specification remains at the core of Time Attack Series, vehicles will have to comply with certain MSA regulations in order to compete, including in the Pro-Series: FIA homologated seat and 5-point harness, mandatory 6-point roll cage and appropriate fire extinguisher. In both classes, drivers must wear MSA-compliant personal protection equipment.

The Championship Regulations have already been submitted to the MSA for approval and organisers have now opened registrations for the 2010 season which begins at Oulton Park on 24th April.

Colin Hilton, MSA Chief Executive:

“It is very exciting to welcome a new discipline into the family of motor sport. Time Attack is a professional, well-run series and the organisers have been extremely pro-active in terms of bringing the sport in line with the MSA’s requirements. The series is particularly popular among a new group of fans that does not perhaps engage with more traditional forms of motor sport and we look forward to working closely with the organisers as the sport continues to grow and develop.”

Andy Barnes, Co Founder and Commercial Director, Time Attack Series:

“Today is a proud moment for the aftermarket tuning industry. As Time Attack is the pinnacle competitive environment for the aftermarket, its role within the industry is more important than ever, stimulating tuners, drivers and engineering. It has been vital that we create a challenging series to compete within that also inspires the fans and spectators, as noted in the number of teams and spectators we attract to our events. That the Time Attack Series has now come under the MSA’s regulations in its own right is further evidence of our strong energetic vision to act in the best interests of not only Time Attack but motor sport in general. We are delighted to welcome the MSA to the Time Attack Series.”

Glen Horncastle, Co Founder and Operations Director, Time Attack Series:

“Since we ran the first Time Attack event at Rockingham in June 2005, the emphasis has always been on ensuring the on-track elements of the series were operated in a safe and professional manner. We have introduced elements of the MSA’s Blue Book into the series’ regulations in such a way that the competitors understand them and fully appreciate the reasoning behind them. It is vital that we recognise that the vast majority of our competitors have not come from a traditional motor sport background. Although the journey has been tough at times, to have gained MSA recognition is very rewarding and a testament to all the hard work everyone has put into the series over the past five years.”

Time Attack again showcased at the most prestigious motorsport show in Europe, the AutoSport Show at the Birmingham NEC in january 2010.

The stand was staffed over the four days of the show by various members of the Time Attack team (that’s Rob looking very happy indeed in the above pic) and were on hand to answer the many questions from competitors, sponsors, industry and general visitors interested to know more.

The relaxed environment of the stand became a great place to meet and talk Time Attack and everyone that visited left with a feel good factor, infact it ws a shame the show ended as were all having such a great time.

On the stand we showcased the safety/pace car for the 2010 season in the shape of the Middlehurst Motorsport Nissan GTR35 which will be keeping the on-track side of things in order, and yes that it the registraion plate of the vehicle – cool eh.

Michelle Westby (our resident face of Time Attack) was also on the stand for the duration of the show and was kept busy with photographers always asking for a pose as well as spectators looking for that special pic with her.

Also at the show on the AutoGlym stand were the 2009 champions Roger Clark Motorsport. The Gobstopper have fantastic interest due to not only it’s on track presence but it’s phenomenal build quality and it did not look out of place amongst the varied top class motorsport machinery surrounding it.

Also on the DC Clutch stand was Paul Hughes DC5 adorned with the trophies he had won in the 09 Series, note the Cosworth F1 conrods and camshaft which are an absolutely fantastic prize I am sure you agree.

Toyo Tyres did not dissapoint either with their twin models who were also regulars on the Time Attack stand.

And finally the most important person to visit the AutoSport Show 2010 – Jenson Button, who spent time with the fans who flocked to see him every time he came out for an interview on the main stage.

So to summarise the AutoSport Show 2010 gave us the chance again to meet with old and new faces and most of all was a phenomenal success for Time Attack as it is now seen by the industry and motorsport enthusiasts as a credible motorsport and 2010 is shaping up to be a fantastic season. Stay with us for the season and be sure to visit for upto date information on what is going on in the world of Time Attack.

All that’s left to say is: we’ll see you at Oulton Park on 24th April for the season opener.

The fast-paced Snetterton circuit would prove to be the scene of victory for Roger Clark Motorsport as Olly Clark piloted their “Gobstopper” Impreza to a second consecutive Time Attack crown. It’s an unprecedented achievement and afterwards Clark said “it’s been a great season, the car’s been really good throughout. The standard of the cars and drivers has been even better this year, so to still be up there with what’s actually an old car now is amazing! I’m really happy”.

Starting the day with 100 more points than both Steve Guglielmi and the RSE Motorsport EVO VIII, Clark only needed to outscore them in the qualifying session for the Super Battle to retain the crown. Despite being slower than the space-framed Focus of Andy Gallagher (1:09.865secs) and Phil Glew in the Zen Impreza (1:09.940), Clark’s 1:10.818secs time was faster than Guglielmi’s Lotus by just 0.018secs and almost 5.5secs quicker than Chris Ward in the RSE car. This meant that even if either driver scored maximum points in the Super Battle it still wouldn’t be enough to knock Clark off the top spot, who stretched his points lead to an unassailable 110 points before that last session. Glew actually went on to win Round 5, Guglielmi taking 2nd place and Gareth Lloyd finishing in 3rd with Clark all the way back in 10th spot as he clearly eased off for the last session of the day. But those results meant that Guglielmi and Lloyd also joined Clark on the podium for the season awards, coming 2nd and 3rd respectively for the year.

The bright yellow EVO VI of Nicholls on way to Club Pro title

It was a similar story to Clark’s for James Nichols in the Club Pro class, Nicholls starting the day with just Robin Duxbury able to challenge him for the class title. Duxbury didn’t make it to the qualifying session though while Nicholls’ EVO VI put the quickest time in to secure 50 points before the Super Battle. This put him home and dry for the title but he still cemented that in the last session with another quickest lap in class, ahead of Jonathan Faull’s EVO VIII and John Stevenson’s Impreza. Coincidentally it was those last two drivers who also took the season’s runners-up gongs for the 2009 Club Pro class.

Meanwhile in the Club class of Time Attack there were five season titles to be handed out by the end of Round 6: 4WD, RWD, FWD, NA under 3000cc and NA over 3000cc. Duncan Graham was the driver in pole position for the 4WD title at the beginning of the day and once again doing enough in qualification for the Super Battle was the key to his success. Getting maximum points there and Russ Paton only managing the fourth best haul meant nothing that Paton could do in the final session would stop Graham from winning. He gave it a good go though, putting in a 1:14.344secs time to win the event and keep Graham on the second step of the podium for the day, but the result that really mattered was the end of season standings and that switched Graham and Paton’s position. Graham also won the SIDC trophy for the season to complete his haul.

Supras took the spoils in the RWD class, the Whifbitz cars of Steve Linton and Paul Whiffin ending the season in 1st and 2nd places respectively. Whiffin got one up on Linton for the day after finishing a step ahead of him on the podium, but even he was bettered by Jamie Reynolds in his Lotus Elise. Had Reynolds competed in all events he would surely have been in the running for top honours, this result being his second consecutive class victory, but as it was he didn’t even end the season in the top three. That honour went to the popular Lance Turner in his RB26 engined GTS-t Skyline, much to the crowd’s delight.

There was a chance that Marco Haig in his Fiat Coupe could have taken the FWD class from the grasp of Paul West though. In fact, every round that Haig entered he bagged maximum points in qualifying and in the final Super Battle. West has consistently been the next car behind him, including at Round 6, but his maximum points from the first round of the season were enough to make sure he was the one picking up the Cosworth-sponsored trophy.

Paul Hughes' BuddyClub Integra was impressive throughout 2009

That competitive pairing in the FWD class was matched by Tony Campbell and Paul Hughes in the NA under 3000cc class. The Buddy Club Integra of Hughes had been phenomenal throughout the year scoring maximum points in all events aside from in the first round when it dropped 100 points by not being able to compete in the Super Battle. Campbell’s consistency in his Porsche (which was replaced by an E30 BMW M3 for Snetterton) had seen him push Hughes throughout the year but Hughes’ win in Round 6 kept Campbell in second place overall. However there was no such contest in the over 3000cc category, Jeff Mileham and his TVR being the stalwart of that class and being the unsurprising title winner.

Initial count-ups show that 64 drivers have entered 2009’s Time Attack series in the Club Class which is truly incredible. A notable mention went to Kev Duckworth who won the Spirit of Time Attack for his resilience in the face of problems and eagerness to help others. Throughout the year though there have been thrills and spills along with a great array of brilliantly prepared Club Class cars and if the displays at Snetterton were anything to go by, 2010’s Club Class may prove to be even more competitive.

The same could be said of the Pro Class and the Club Pro Class too, and you can be sure that there will be teams aiming to stop RCM from making it three titles in a row. But as it stands, the RCM team made it a deserved two in a row and will no doubt to prove tough competition in 2010. A massive thank you to all the teams, drivers, supporters throughout the country who turned up to enjoy Time Attack and to our sponsors who all helped to make 2009’s season the best yet. 2010 will have a lot to live up to, but you can bet the cars will come back next year leaner, faster and more determined to smash that clock than ever.

Last month my friend (and regular TA competitor) Warren Kelly was going along to the Fast Ford magazine performance day at Bruntinghtorpe Proving ground so invited me to tag along. Bruntinghtorpe is an old WW2 airforce base and the runway provides a superb venue for testing not only acceleration times but also top speeds but for this day it was a straight acceleration tests.

When we arrived Andrew Gallagher and Charlie Shaw, who are also TA competitors, were present so it was a great opportunity to see what Warren’s TA Club Challenge (Street) spec car could achieve as well as Andy’s and Charlie’s TA Prototype cars.

The Fast Ford team were using approved measuring equipment to ensure the times were accurate. The weather was not kind (as you will see from the pictures) but that did not dampen the spirits for them to go out and put down some times. Mind you Andy and Charlie are from Scotland where the weather can be a bit damp so to them it was just another day outdoors!!!

The best times achieved by Warren were:

0-60 = 4.2

0-100 = 8.8

Unfortunately Warren’s gearbox and diff broke before he could make a second run so this being his only run was very impressive.

Charlie Shaw/Andy Gallagher spec Cosworths:

0-60 = 2.7

0-100 = 5.4

REMEMBER that all the above times were set in very wet conditions and with street tyres so these times are absolutely brilliant and show exactly what beasts these Time Attack Cossie’s are.

A little while ago I visited the A1GP at Brands Hatch and stumbled across a friendly face involved in the technical aspects of the A1GP race cars, the friendly face in question was that of Mr. Marc Herridge, pictured on the left wearing blue gloves.

Marc’s role as head official for the Time Attack Series technical and scrutineering forms the largest part of what he does throughout his motorsport year and the other times he’s not with us he works around the paddocks, as with A1GP, within top class motorsport which means that the Time Attack Series is always in good (and safe) hands.

Marc has worked for us for 3 years now and is an integral part of the Time Attack Series. Marc also heads up the European Drift Championship technical and scrutineering and also works for the MSA (MotorSport Association) as a noise tester and scrutineer.

It was pleasing to see Marc in this environment and I actually got the chance to have a chill out and a coffee with him which makes a change from the Time Attack events where we are lucky to have the time to grab 5 minutes together due to his work load on the day of looking after the competitors, other scrutineers and issues that arise.

For any technical or saftey questions please email Marc here; scrutineer@timeattack.co.uk

You may not recognise his name, but Wes was a new ‘One Hit Wonder’ combatant in the Club Challenge at Brands Hatch. You don’t always hear what these guys have to say about things, so what did the Supra driving 31 year old make of the experience? “It’s good fun. The first time out was a bit intimidating but it got better and I enjoyed it even more the second time out,” Wes told us. His Supra was all self built, running around 500bhp on the standard engine thanks to a Powerhouse turbo kit, proving you don’t need to have a highly tuned car to compete…he wasn’t even running a front mount intercooler. “I’d done a few trackdays here and there, so thought I’d step up a level by entering Time Attack,” he continues, “the skill level and the pace the other drivers set compared to track days though is something else!”. Wes didn’t make it to the finals, but with a taste for Time Attack you’ll hopefully be seeing his Supra at more rounds in the future where the guys from MkIV Owners will no doubt be cheering him on again.
