COMPETITOR BULLETIN #3 2022
Cadwell Park – Rounds 1 & 2 Round up
What a way to kick things off! I trust you’ll agree, our double header at Cadwell Park provided a great start to the season. Good weather, good competition and good crowds. Clearly the full lifting of restrictions made a considerable difference to spectator numbers with almost double the figure than that of last year.

Congratulations to all who won awards – and to the four drivers who recorded new class lap records. Even when you think there’s no more from the track, we still see the times fall.

As organisers, even though it was a packed programme, we were pleased to run through the timetable from top to bottom with no sessions compromised. Clearly, although we do build time into the schedule, the reduction in the number of red flag incidents is a considerable factor in being able to achieve this. Thank you for playing your part!

As we were, we trust you were pleased to get back to traditional scrutineering and signing on methods. Consequently, the self-declaration system is no longer required until further notice.

A summary of the results from Cadwell Park are listed below, together with a link to the championship points standings.

We ask that you read through the rest of this bulletin, as it contains important information.

Tyres

I’m sure it will come as no surprise to see this subject included in this bulletin. As you are aware, with Pirelli winding down the production of certain sizes of the Trofeo R tyre – and it appears some sizes and compounds of slicks – the range available to Time Attack competitors has been reduced this year. In light of this situation, we have introduced a secondary back-up brand in the form of the Nankang.

Please note that the Trofeo R is still the control tyre of first choice for the classes where treaded tyres are used. There has been a great deal of discussion, some of it based on no factual data whatsoever, as to the difference in performance between the makes of tyres. Add to this the alleged performance of the chosen types in wet conditions, we now have a plethora of driver opinions and a mish-mash of brands nominated.

Therefore, to avoid further issues that could potentially lead to lap records being cancelled, the disqualification of drivers and the upsetting of championship sponsors, the following action has been taken:

ALL TYRE DISPENSATIONS HAVE BEEN CANCELLED.

To enable us to reset the balance and ensure the situation does not get out of hand as we progress through the season, ALL DRIVERS (even those running on Pirellis) must log into their entry page and fill in the new fields in order  to provide the following information:

Wheel size
Type of tyre used: Dry / Wet
Size of tyre used: Dry /Wet

CLICK HERE – login, then go to the section that contains the details about your car anbd fill in the tyre fields.

Once we have this information, if you are not running on Pirelli tyres, your application for dispensation will be reassessed and approved – or disapproved – accordingly.

If you do not fill in these details, your car will not pass scrutineering at Brands Hatch.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Still on the subject of tyres, I’m regularly asked if we know who the chosen supplier will be next year. The latest news is that we are in conversation on the subject and we hope to announce details by the end of July.

Media Activity

Thank you to everyone who carried a camera and provided in-car footage at Cadwell. I’m sure you will agree that whilst we are still developing the coverage, the increase in activity and engagement of the public on social media channels is a huge jump forward from that of previous years.

We will shortly be deciding who will be carrying cameras at Brands Hatch.

Once again, Ben Collins will be involved with the output of the coverage and as such, we are asking teams to get even further involved.

To this end, we would like six teams to allow Ben to drive their cars at Brands Hatch at a test day on Friday 27th May.

There will only be time for Ben to drive as it’s a pre-booked MSV test day, with the plan that he sets a fast lap to make comparisons between other cars in the class and talks about his findings on video.

Whilst we already have three teams signed up, we are still looking for a further three. If you are interested in being one of them, please contact Andy Barnes ASAP direct: [email protected]

Commercial obligations

With the up-shift in media activity, the likely increase in crowd numbers and a push by all of us to make Time Attack bigger and better than it already is, we need the outward facing profile to look as professional and high profile as possible.

Sponsors are an integral part of us being able to achieve this increase in status and exposure. We shall therefore be invoking the following regulations:

Podiums: It is compulsory that all drivers must wear their race suits, done up and worn properly. Failure to do so on the podium will invoke a penalty that may lead to the withdrawal of your award.

Championship decals: It is a regulation that cars must carry the championship decals as set out on the decal plan.

There were a number of cars competing at Cadwell Park that did not fully comply. If the decals are not in place as per the regulations, your car WILL FAIL scrutineering and you will not be able to start the event until they are correctly in place. Spare stickers are available on request in advance and can be collected from the signing-on office.

On the subject of decals, if your car is being used on the road between events, it is law that the competition numbers are removed. If Time Attack decals remain on the car whilst it is being driven on the road, it is imperative that good driving standards are upheld to avoid the championship from being bought into disrepute.

Parking

For those of you who are seasoned Time Attack competitions, you will know that one of my poet subjects is parking in the paddock. With the addition of other championships and greater numbers in ours and the TCR and Civic Cup paddocks – plus the addition of the Drift Pro Championship at all of our events this year – space is even more of a premium.

Whilst we will have exclusive use of the inner paddock and pit garages at Brands Hatch, last year it was more crowded that it needed to have been due to trailers and private cars parked where they should not have been. I must admit that I’m fed up with being a traffic warden and placating teams who can’t find a space to set up. Therefore, if you don’t want to be subject to my consistent nagging and receive a £50 fine in the process, please park in the places designated for the purpose.

Rounds 3 & 4 – Brands Hatch

Before we know it, we’ll be heading to our ‘home’ circuit and lining up for our biggest event of the year. There’s another action-packed programme in store, with all of our four championships converging over the two days: Time Attack, Motorsport UK Drift Pro, TCR UK and Civic Cup.

Content for the show is building too, with clubs, traders and exhibits coming in by the day. It would be fair to say that we can expect a good attendance on the Sunday and with restrictions lifted, we’re looking to boost public engagement with the reintroduction of the pit lane walkabout and afew other initiatives.

Please keep as look out for more championship news and information as we head towards Brands Hatch.

Until then…

Simon
