Specifically introduced for older vehicles to ensure fair performance on track, the Classic & Retro Class provides a category for those who’s cars feature older technology and engineering. Eligible cars are those models which were introduced before the manufacture year 2000. However for example a car built in 2002 could enter should it be of a type that was introduced prior to 2000 in design.
In contrast to many other championships for historic vehicles, the specifications in Time Attack are relatively open, with only the base-car having to be a model from the era, which means contemporary modifications can be carried out.
Like all other classes that are covered by Time Attack Club Category rules, the only specific equipment that has to be fitted to make the car eligible, is a four-point harness and a hand-held fire extinguisher. Restrictions do apply however, to the level of aero, the fitting of sequential transmissions and space-framing which means that generally speaking they are older cars that would otherwise be in our Club Challenge or Pocket Rocket classes. We have the provision for Pro specification classic cars however we only switch this class on if we have suitable entrants from time to time.
On the driver side, you’ll need the correct personal safety kit such as helmet, race suit, gloves and boots and you’ll need to apply for your Motorsport UK licence (no ARDS test required in our Club categories). Before you compete, your car will be scrutineered to confirm it meets the safety requirements and the relevant class rules. All of the detail you’ll need — including eligibility, required items, and what modifications are permitted — is set out in the official regulations linked lower down this page, and our team is always on hand if you’d like a steer, especially if it’s your first time in a competitive setting.
You can enter as a one‑off to see how you get on (SRE — Single Round Entry), or register for the full season and chase championship points and podium celebrations. The only tyre requirement to note is that if you plan to score points and be eligible for lap records, you’ll need to run the championship control tyre: the Yokohama A052, otherwise you can use your existing non-slick tyres.
This class offers a welcome space for tuning house-built cars or ‘club racing’ cars to explore further modification than what the car was originally made for back in the day – creative home builds are the name of the game here.
The class is very competitive and an exciting wide variety of cars compete each year. If your car has more modifications than this class allows or you wish to compete alongside more modern machinery, please check our Club Challenge, Club Pro and Pocket Rocket classes.
All competitors take part in four 15-minute (minimum) on-track sessions within their class: Warm-Up, Attack 1, Attack 2 and Super Attack.
This format gives drivers multiple opportunities to refine setup and push for their quickest lap of the event, building towards the decisive Super Attack session.
Across the season, competitors perform in front of tens of thousands of spectators as the championship headlines on-track at major automotive events including Modified Live, Tunerfest, JDM Jam, GO Japan and the Obsession Car Show, providing a fantastic platform to showcase driving ability, engineering expertise and partner brands.
If you’re looking for competitive, accessible motorsport with plenty of track time, strong exposure and an unforgettable season of racing, the Time Attack Championship is the perfect place to compete.
