Specifically introduced for vehicles that were manufactured 25 or more years ago, the Classic & Retro Class provides a category for those who’s cars feature older technology and engineering.
In contrast to many other championships for historic vehicles, the specifications in Time Attack are relatively open, with only the base-car having to be a model from the era, which means contemporary modifications can be carried out. The class is even open to cars manufactured less than 25 years ago, provided the same model in the same specification was produced prior to that date.
Like all other classes that are covered by Time Attack Club Category rules, the only specific equipment that has to be fitted to make the car eligible, is a four-point harness and a hand-held fire extinguisher. And for the driver it’s an approved helmet, race suit, boots and gloves. However, as with all properly administered motorsport series’, to keep the competition close there’s a set of rules, although Time Attack has some of the most flexible and all-encompassing regulations there is. Restrictions do apply however, to the level of aero, the fitting of sequential transmissions and space-framing. Cars must also have fully functioning OE lights and operate within the blanket 105db noise limit.
Although not compulsory, it’s recommended that safety equipment is fitted, such as a cage, ignition cut-off switch and extinguisher system. If the car’s specification makes it more of an out-and-out racer, it may well have to be elevated to a Pro Class, which means it has to be built to Motorsport UK Section J rules.
Controlled Pirelli Trofeo R tyres should be used, although it is understood that some older cars are unable to run modern-day tyres and therefore, concessions are made for certain sizes and specifications, subject to approval.
Drivers who sign-up for the whole season will score championship points and win trophies for first, second and third places in each class. Phased payment plans are available to make the cost of participation easier to manage. Entry is also available on an event-by-event basis for just £360 per-round (Club Classes) and £420 per round (Pro Classes).
Classic & Retro competitors will take part in all four 15-minute (minimum) sessions: Warm-up, Practice, Qualifying and the Final. Championship points are awarded in the Qualifying and the Final sessions, whereas it’s the finishing position in the Final that dictates the overall results.
